DTS

Frequently Asked Questions

Lecture Phase

+ What does a typical day look like on DTS?

Breakfast – Jesus ate with his disciples so we believe gathering and sharing a meal together is a great start to the day!

Devotional time – God loves one on one time with us. We get to know someone by spending time with them so it’s important for us to do that with the Lord!

Worship – Here at YWAM Harbour City, we worship God every day; Monday to Friday. We see it as a privilege rather than a chore to gather as a community and lift Jesus high together!

Lecture – Every week we have a different topic. Some include: Hearing the Voice of God, Evangelism, Father Heart of God.

Lunch– Yummmmmm

Afternoon activity – It varies everyday but may include intercession, small group, learning dances & dramas for doing evangelism.

Serving time – It’s a joy to use our hands & feet to bless others! Practically speaking this means cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping etc.

Dinner – Yummmmmm

Evening activity – Generally we have one evening off a week! For the other evenings we may do evangelism, game nights, research projects on our outreach locations, or take part in our Community Night.

Sleep – Get your 8 hours to be refreshed for another day!

Weekends are free most weeks! You can hang out with your fellow students & staff, explore the city, process the teaching, or use the time to finish your homework. On Sunday we strongly encourage you to attend a local church.

+ What is there to do in Hong Kong on my days off?

Check out this video we made about top 8 things to do in Hong Kong!

+ Who will the teachers be?

Each week we have a different speaker sharing on a different topic. We invite speakers from our base as well as from other parts of the world, both within YWAM and outside of YWAM.

Speakers are not just teachers who have a lot of head knowledge about their topic; they are people who have applied the teaching to their lives and therefore are able to impart to us. One of our YWAM values is ‘Do First Then Teach’ so we are intentional in inviting speakers who live out what they teach.

“And this surely must be the distinctive that marks and brands the University of the Nations: our focus on transformation rather than information; on application rather than knowledge; on truth rather than facts; on learning rather than teaching.” – Margaret Tooley

+ What topics are covered in the lectures?

It is our goal to cover each of these categories throughout the lecture phase through a variety of different teachings and learning activities.

  1. God’s Nature and Character

  2. God’s Intention for Individuals, Peoples and Creation

  3. God’s Redemption: Sin and The Cross

  4. God’s Family: His Children & His Church

  5. God’s World: His Call & His Commission Doing the Works of Jesus

  6. YWAM: A Response to God

Each school’s teachings will change a bit, however, some recurring teachings include: The Father Heart of God, Nature and Character of God, Worship and Intercession, Hearing God’s Voice, and much more.

+ Will I have access to the internet?

Yes, you can pay a weekly fee to use our base Wi-Fi or you can buy your own SIM card.

Outreach Phase

+ What is outreach like?

Outreach is where you get to apply the principles you learn during lecture phase in some of the countries which are dear to God’s heart! It’s amazing, eye-opening, fun, tiring, challenging and all for the glory of Jesus!

The focus of Discipleship Training School outreach is evangelism, so you can expect to have tons of opportunities to interact with non-Christians, sharing the Good News & love of Christ with them. We also love to serve alongside local churches & ministries.

Some examples of ministry include: preaching on the streets, ‘treasure hunt’ (you pray and ask God for clues about specific individuals to talk to then you go and find them!), serving the poor, teaching English, practical service projects, running children’s programmes at schools & orphanages, teaching & sharing at Sunday services… the list is endless!

+ Where do we go for outreach?

The Discipleship Training School staff & leaders pray and ask God about where to go for each school. One of our YWAM values is ‘Hear & Obey’ so we make our decision based on what we sense God says.

Some past locations include India, Indonesia, Greece, the Middle East, Thailand & Cambodia, and other nations in our surrounding area.

+ Is outreach required?

Yes!

Application Process

+ How do I apply?

You can click here to start your application process!

+ How long do I wait before I know if I've been accepted into the school?

Once we have received your complete application we aim to process it within one week. A complete application means you have filled out Part One and Part Two of the application and your references have submitted their forms.

+ Can married couples or families do DTS?

Yes! One of our YWAM values is to ‘value families’.

‘YWAM affirms the importance of families serving God together in missions, not just the father and/or mother. We encourage the development of strong and healthy family units, with each member sharing the call to missions and contributing their gifts in unique and complementary ways.’

We may be able to offer childcare during your Discipleship Training School. Please contact us for possible options!

Financial Information

+ How much does DTS cost?

Scholarships are available once you complete your school application. Our staff will review each scholarship request case by case.

HOWEVER, we believe when God calls He will also provide. We have countless stories of God miraculously meeting our financial needs. Once you have been accepted, we can walk with you in support raising.

One of our YWAM values is ‘practise dependence on God’ which means we believe that we depend on God for financial provision (this often comes through His people - family, friends & church).

+ What are some ideas for support raising?

Preparing to Come

+ What should I bring?

Once you have been accepted on our Discipleship Training School, we will send you a packing list!

+ What vaccinations do I need?

You can contact your doctor to ask for recommended vaccinations. On our side, we highly recommend you to get at least: Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B in your home country. Try to start as early as possibile as some vaccines require multiple injections. There is a possibility that you will need to get other vaccinations if outreach locations require them.

+ Do I need to buy insurance?

Yes! Every student is required to have an international emergency medical insurance policy to cover any medical & hospital costs in the event of accident or illness.

After DTS

+ What opportunities do I have with YWAM after DTS?

1) Join staff!

2) Further training

Discipleship Training School is a prerequisite for all training schools and degree programmes run by the University of the Nations. If you want to further your training, there are a lot of different schools you can consider. For example, our base runs a School of Worship. For Parents

+ Will my child be able to get around speaking English?

The official languages of Hong Kong are English and Cantonese. People are able to get around speaking only English because most people (but not all) speak the language.

+ Will my child be able to have a phone plan?

Your child will be able to get a phone plan if they want! Their school staff will be able to help them once they arrive. However, the village does have difficulty receiving signal occasionally. Another option is to use the Wi-Fi at our base and they can pay a weekly fee for it. They may use a smart phone in conjuction with either the base Wi-Fi or a local SIM card to send messages and make video calls!

+ What will my child need to bring?

Once a student is accepted, we will send them a packing list.

+ How much extra spending money will my child need to bring?

That really depends on how much your child wants/ decides to spend in their free time. Here is some information which will help you budget:

  • Going into the city costs around HKD$25 one-way.
  • An average meal in the city costs around HKD$60
  • Mailing a letter overseas usually costs under HKD$10
  • Wi-Fi at our campus costs HKD$100 a week

+ What vaccinations does my child need?

You can contact your doctor to ask for recommended vaccinations. On our side, we highly recommend to get at least Tetanus, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B in your home country. Try to start as early as possible as some vaccines require multiple injections.

+ Will my child have access to quality medical care in case of emergency?

Hong Kong has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. It has 11 private and 42 public hospitals. The closest hospital from our campus is just a 10 minute ride away! Please make sure your child has emergency medical insurance which will cover any medical & hospital costs in the event of accident or illness - this is required for all of our students.

+ How will I be contacted if there is an emergency?

We have the emergency contact information of every student (including phone number and e-mail) so we will be able to contact his or her family in case of an emergency.

+ Are the outreach locations safe?

The Discipleship Training School staff & leaders pray and ask God about where to go for each school. One of our YWAM values is ‘Hear & Obey’ so we make our decision based on what we sense God says.

Please know that safety is very important to our staff as we take our students on outreach. While no one can guarantee the safety of someone else’s life, there are some things we do to ensure the outreach is as safe as possible. For example no student is allowed to be out on their own; we do a lot of research about our locations prior to going so we are well-informed, and we work with local contacts who will educate us on the location and any safety hazards of which we need to be aware.

+ Could my child get a degree through Youth With a Mission?

Yes! Discipleship Training School is a prerequisite to all training schools and degree programmes run by the University of the Nations.

You can get an associate degree, bachelor degree, graduate diploma or master's degree.

For more information please visit the U of N website here.
